What event on October 5, 1789, forced Louis XVI to move from Versailles to Paris?
Answer
Women's March on Versailles
Answer
Women's March on Versailles
The Women's March on Versailles forced Louis XVI to move from Versailles to Paris on October 5–6, 1789.
The march began when Parisian market women protested the high price and shortage of bread. Thousands eventually traveled roughly 21 kilometers to Versailles, where the king, royal court, and National Constituent Assembly were based. Their demands soon expanded from food relief to political pressure on the monarchy.
The crowd besieged the palace during the night. After protesters entered the grounds and royal guards were killed, Louis XVI agreed to return to Paris with his family. They settled at the Tuileries Palace, placing the king much closer to revolutionary crowds and political activists.
A common mix-up is the Storming of the Bastille, which occurred on July 14, 1789, in Paris. The Women's March was a separate event that brought the monarchy itself from Versailles into the revolutionary capital.
