What event on August 10, 1792, led to the overthrow of the French monarchy?

The story behind the answer

The event on August 10, 1792, that led to the overthrow of the French monarchy was the Storming of the Tuileries. Revolutionary fédérés and Paris National Guards attacked the Tuileries Palace, the residence of Louis XVI and his family.

The palace was defended by Swiss Guards and royalist supporters. After heavy fighting, the royal family took refuge with the Legislative Assembly, while hundreds of defenders and attackers were killed. The insurrection destroyed the monarchy’s remaining political authority and paved the way for a new National Convention.

The monarchy was formally abolished on September 21, 1792, and the French Republic was proclaimed the following day. A common mix-up is to confuse this event with the Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, which began the Revolution but did not overthrow the king. The Flight to Varennes was also important, but it occurred in June 1791.
