The English word debutante describes a young woman being formally presented at a debutante celebration.
The term comes from French débutante, meaning a female beginner or newcomer. In social history, a debutante was traditionally a young woman introduced into adult society, often at a formal ball or court presentation. Some quinceañera celebrations share presentation and formal-dance features with debutante events, although the traditions have different histories and cultural meanings.
A debutante is not simply another word for quinceañera. Quinceañera usually refers both to the celebrant and, informally, to the fifteenth-birthday celebration in Spanish-speaking cultures. Debutante instead emphasizes a social presentation and can apply in countries where no fifteenth-birthday ritual exists.
