What emoji reference website was created by Jeremy Burge in 2013? The website is Emojipedia. It is an online encyclopedia that documents emoji meanings, names, histories, Unicode details, and differences between major platforms.

Burge created Emojipedia in 2013, when emoji were spreading rapidly beyond Japan but often lacked consistent explanations. The site became a practical reference for people trying to identify an unfamiliar symbol, understand its intended meaning, or compare how it appears on Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, and other systems.

Emojipedia does not design every emoji or decide which characters enter Unicode. Those responsibilities involve the Unicode Consortium and its Emoji Subcommittee, while platform companies create their own artwork for approved characters. Emojipedia explains and records those variations.

The site is also associated with World Emoji Day, which Burge created in 2014. A common mistake is treating Emojipedia as a social-media emoji keyboard or a Unicode governing body; it is primarily a reference and editorial resource.
