Bolin primarily bends earth. His earthbending is the foundation of his fighting style, pro-bending career, and later achievements in The Legend of Korra.

Bolin grew up in Republic City and became one of the city’s most recognizable pro-benders. In the arena, he uses earth projectiles and defensive techniques to control space and push opponents out of the ring. His element also complements his brother Mako’s firebending, making them an effective team.

Bolin later discovers lavabending, a rare sub-skill of earthbending that allows him to manipulate molten rock. This ability appears during Book Three: Change and distinguishes him from most other earthbenders. It does not change his primary element: lava is treated as an advanced earthbending technique.
