What edition number is the 2026 Open Championship?

The story behind the answer

The 2026 Open Championship is the 154th edition of The Open Championship. It is scheduled for 16–19 July 2026 at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England.

The Open is the oldest of golf’s four men’s major championships. It began at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland in 1860, when the competition was played over 36 holes. The event later expanded and moved among historic links courses in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. Its numbering counts the official championships, including years in which the event was not held because of the world wars.

The 2026 event follows the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush in 2025. It will be Royal Birkdale’s eleventh Open, following previous championships there in 1954, 1961, 1965, 1971, 1976, 1983, 1991, 1998, 2008 and 2017. The next edition, in 2027, is scheduled for the Old Course at St Andrews.
