What early mechanical robot did Leonardo da Vinci design in the form of a seated armored knight?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s seated armored automaton is known as Leonardo’s robot.

Leonardo designed the mechanical knight around 1495 for a pageant at the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The machine was intended to sit, stand, raise its visor, and move its arms through a system of pulleys, cables, and gears hidden inside an armored shell. It was not an electronic robot; it was a clockwork-style automaton powered by mechanical motion.

The original device has not survived, and historians debate whether Leonardo completed it for the event. The design was reconstructed in the early 21st century by Mark Rosheim, who studied Leonardo’s anatomical and mechanical drawings and produced working models.

The robot demonstrates Leonardo’s ability to connect human anatomy with engineering. Its joints and movement imitate the structure of the body, while its internal mechanisms show how Renaissance automata could be used for spectacle. The term “robot” is modern, but it is now the standard name for the design.
