What earlier national anniversary is the 2026 America250 observance following?

The 2026 America250 observance follows the United States Bicentennial.

The bicentennial marked the 200th anniversary of American independence and was celebrated nationally in 1976. It was a major nationwide commemoration involving public ceremonies, special exhibitions, decorations and commemorative items.

The 2026 event follows the same anniversary sequence but marks 250 years rather than 200. In anniversary terminology, “bi” refers to two, while “semiquincentennial” refers to half of 500.

The bicentennial is sometimes confused with the centennial of 1876, which marked 100 years and was associated with the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The 2026 semiquincentennial is the next major national milestone after the 1976 bicentennial.
