The U.S. quarter, half dollar, and dollar issued for the 1976 Bicentennial displayed the double date 1776–1976.
These three circulating commemorative coins were struck in 1975 and 1976, but all carried the paired dates 1776–1976. The design allowed the coins to identify both the founding-era starting point and the 200th-anniversary year.
The temporary reverse designs were used on the Washington quarter, Kennedy half dollar, and Eisenhower dollar. The quarter showed a colonial drummer, the half dollar featured Independence Hall, and the dollar depicted the Liberty Bell and the Moon.
The coins came in copper-nickel and silver versions, with collectors receiving special sets. They are often called Bicentennial coins even when struck in 1975, because the double date and commemorative designs tied them to the 1976 anniversary.
