What does XMPP stand for?

The story behind the answer

What does XMPP stand for? XMPP stands for eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, commonly written Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol.

XMPP is an open application-layer protocol for exchanging structured data in near real time. It was designed for instant messaging, presence information, and contact-list management, but its extensible XML-based format also supports uses such as voice-over-IP signaling, file transfer, gaming, and messaging middleware.

The protocol was originally known as Jabber and became an open standard rather than a proprietary messaging system. Its design supports federation: a user’s server can communicate with another user’s server, much like email systems exchange messages across domains.

A frequent mistake is to expand XMPP as “eXtensible Messaging Protocol.” The words “and Presence” are essential because reporting whether contacts are online, away, or offline is one of the protocol’s defining original functions. Core XMPP communication is commonly associated with TCP port 5222 for clients and 5269 for server-to-server connections.
