Answer
Wide Area Network
What does WAN stand for? WAN means Wide Area Network. It is a communications network that connects computers and smaller networks across a broad geographic area, such as multiple cities, countries, or continents.
A WAN can link offices, data centers, cloud services, and branch networks using leased lines, fiber, cellular links, satellite connections, or other long-distance telecommunications services. The public Internet is the largest familiar example, although a company can operate a private WAN with its own addressing, security, and routing policies.
WAN is commonly contrasted with LAN, or Local Area Network, which usually covers a home, office, building, or campus. A wide-area design may connect several LANs through routers and carrier infrastructure. “Wireless Area Network” is a tempting distractor because WAN links can use wireless technology, but the acronym describes geographic scope, not the transmission medium. A WAN is therefore not necessarily wireless, and it does not refer to a “node”; it is the network spanning the wider area.
