What does “V-J” stand for in “V-J Day,” the 1945 victory celebration?

The story behind the answer

“V-J” stands for “Victory over Japan” in “V-J Day.”

The abbreviation followed the Allied expression “V-E Day,” meaning Victory in Europe, which marked Nazi Germany’s surrender in May 1945. V-J Day identified the Allied victory over Japan and the effective end of World War II.

The term has been used for more than one date. In Japan, August 15 is associated with the emperor’s surrender broadcast. In the United States and parts of the Americas, news was announced on August 14 because of time-zone differences. September 2 marked the formal signing of the surrender document.

Australia often used the alternative expression “V-P Day,” meaning Victory in the Pacific. These different labels and dates reflect regional customs, time zones, and the difference between a public announcement and a signed capitulation.
