What does the yellow, red and blue stand for in the Steelers logo?

In the Steelers logo, yellow, red and blue represent coal, iron ore and steel scrap. The colors come from the Steelmark emblem created for the American steel industry, reflecting the materials used in steelmaking and Pittsburgh’s industrial heritage.

The Pittsburgh Steelers adopted the Steelmark design for their helmet in 1962 after Cleveland-based Republic Steel suggested it. The original emblem contained the word “Steel” surrounded by three four-pointed shapes called hypocycloids. The club received permission to add “ers” in 1963, creating the familiar Steelers logo.

The colors are sometimes described as yellow for coal, orange for ore and blue for scrap steel.
