What does the Spanish word “quinceañera” literally identify in its traditional usage?

The story behind the answer

In traditional usage, quinceañera identifies a 15-year-old girl celebrating her transition toward womanhood.

The term is formed from quince, meaning “fifteen,” and the feminine Spanish ending -añera, associated with someone reaching or celebrating that age. In English, quinceañera can also refer to the entire celebration rather than only the celebrant.

That double usage can cause confusion in descriptions of the custom. A person may say “she is having her quinceañera” to mean the party, while “the quinceañera entered the hall” refers to the young woman. The related masculine term quinceañero is used in some communities for a boy’s fifteenth-birthday celebration.

Usage is not identical across all Spanish-speaking countries. Quince años, literally “fifteen years,” is another common expression for the event, especially in Mexico and other parts of Latin America.
