What does the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star symbolize?

The story behind the answer

The Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star symbolizes the company’s ambition to motorize land, sea, and air.

Gottlieb Daimler first used a star as a personal symbol, and his sons later associated it with a postcard on which he had marked the family home. The three-pointed form was registered as a trademark in 1909. It eventually became the best-known emblem of Mercedes-Benz.

Each point represents one of the three environments: land vehicles, marine engines, and aircraft engines. The meaning reflects Daimler’s early engineering ambitions, when the company worked across several forms of powered transportation rather than only making passenger cars.

The star is often confused with the four-pointed logo used by some other manufacturers or with a symbol that simply means luxury. Mercedes-Benz’s passenger-car and commercial-vehicle badges have appeared in several arrangements, including a star inside a ring, but the three-part land-sea-air idea remains the classic explanation of the emblem.
