Under Incoterms rules, EXW means “ex works,” making the seller’s delivery obligation especially limited.
With EXW, the seller generally makes the goods available at a named place, such as a factory or warehouse. The buyer normally arranges loading, transport, export procedures, insurance and import clearance, and bears the associated risks and costs.
EXW is often contrasted with DDP, where the seller takes responsibility for delivery, import clearance and duties at the named destination. FOB is another different term: it is used for sea or inland-waterway transport and transfers risk when goods are loaded on board the vessel.
The Incoterms rules are published by the International Chamber of Commerce. They clarify transport responsibilities, costs and risk, but they do not by themselves determine ownership, payment terms or the contract price.
