What does the abbreviation KTX mean in South Korea’s high-speed rail system?

The story behind the answer

In South Korea’s high-speed rail system, KTX means Korea Train Express.

The name describes the service rather than one single train model. KTX services began in 2004 and were created to provide fast intercity rail connections, especially between Seoul and Busan. The English phrase “Korea Train Express” is commonly abbreviated to KTX in timetables, station signs, and railway discussions.

The first KTX trains were based on French TGV technology, but South Korea later developed its own train families, including KTX-Sancheon. The KTX brand therefore covers more than the original imported or locally assembled trainsets.

KTX is sometimes mistaken for the name of the railway company. It is primarily a service brand, while Korail operates many KTX services. The abbreviation also should not be expanded as “Korean Train Express,” because the official English wording uses “Korea.”
