What does the abbreviation ETF stand for?

The story behind the answer

ETF stands for exchange-traded fund.

An exchange-traded fund is an investment fund whose shares are bought and sold on a stock exchange. Like a mutual fund, an ETF can hold a basket of assets, such as stocks, bonds, commodities, currencies, or other securities. Unlike a traditional mutual fund, its market price changes continuously during the trading day as investors buy and sell shares.

Many ETFs are designed to track an index. For example, an ETF may follow the S&P 500, a technology sector, government bonds, or companies in a particular country. This structure can give investors diversification through a single trade rather than requiring them to purchase every underlying security separately.

A frequent misconception is that every ETF is completely passive or risk-free. Many track indexes, but actively managed ETFs also exist, and all ETFs carry risks related to their holdings, market movements, fees, and sometimes trading spreads. The abbreviation is also not the same as “electronic trading facility” or any of the other distractors: the phrase describes both the fund structure and its exchange-based trading method.
