What does Telegram use to sync most chat content across logged-in devices?

The story behind the answer

Telegram uses cloud storage to sync most chat content across logged-in devices. Ordinary cloud chats are stored on Telegram’s servers, allowing messages, photos, videos, files, and other media to appear across phones, tablets, desktops, and web sessions.

This design means users can switch devices without manually transferring a backup. Logging into a new device normally brings back the cloud-chat history, while drafts and other account-level data can also synchronize. Telegram permits many simultaneous sessions, which is why a conversation started on a phone can continue on a computer.

The important exception is Secret Chats. They use end-to-end encryption and are tied to the devices on which they were created, so they do not sync through Telegram’s cloud in the same way. Removing the app or logging out can therefore affect access to Secret Chats, unlike ordinary cloud conversations.

Cloud storage is not the same as a USB backup or email forwarding. Telegram’s servers provide the live synchronization layer; users can separately export chats with Telegram Desktop, but exported data is an archive rather than something normally re-imported into the account.
