What does OLED stand for?

OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode.

An OLED is a type of light-emitting diode in which an organic semiconductor layer produces light when an electric current passes through it. The light-emitting material sits between electrodes, and the layers are deposited on a substrate. Because each pixel can generate its own light, OLED panels do not require the separate backlight used by conventional LCD displays.

That self-emissive design allows OLED screens to switch individual pixels completely off, producing very deep blacks and high contrast. It also enables thinner panels and, with suitable materials, flexible or curved displays. OLED technology is used in televisions, computer monitors, smartphones, smartwatches, and some lighting products.

The term is sometimes confused with “Organic Light Emitting Display,” but “diode” is the correct final word. OLED is also related to AMOLED, which means Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode. In an AMOLED display, an active-matrix transistor array controls the individual OLED pixels, making the technology practical for high-resolution mobile screens.
