What does MTR stand for in Hong Kong's metro system?
Answer
Mass Transit Railway
Answer
Mass Transit Railway
MTR stands for Mass Transit Railway, Hong Kong’s principal urban rail system.
The name originally described the city’s new underground railway, planned during the 1960s as Hong Kong’s population and road traffic grew. Construction of the initial system began in 1975, and the first MTR trains entered service in 1979. The network has since expanded across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.
MTR is also used as the familiar name of MTR Corporation, the company that operates the railway. This can create a small terminology trap: “Mass Transit Railway” refers to the system, while “MTR Corporation” refers to its operator. The modern network also includes services beyond the original metro lines, including light rail, the Airport Express and high-speed rail connections.
In 2007, MTR operations merged with those of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation. That merger brought several formerly separate railway routes under MTR management while retaining the established MTR name. Hong Kong’s Octopus smart-card system, introduced for MTR travel in 1997, later became widely useful across the city’s public transport network.
