What document formally ended Japan's hostilities with the Allies in World War II?

The story behind the answer

The Japanese Instrument of Surrender formally ended Japan's hostilities with the Allies in World War II.

This printed capitulation document was signed on September 2, 1945, aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. It stated that Japan accepted the provisions of the Potsdam Declaration and ordered Japanese forces to cease hostilities and surrender.

The instrument is not the same as the Potsdam Declaration. The declaration set out the Allied terms in July 1945, while the instrument recorded Japan's formal acceptance of those terms. The later Treaty of San Francisco, which came into force in 1952, established a separate postwar peace settlement with most Allied countries.
