What did the abbreviation ASP stand for in professional surfing?
Answer
Association of Surfing Professionals
Answer
Association of Surfing Professionals
In professional surfing, ASP stood for Association of Surfing Professionals.
The organization governed major professional surfing competitions before it was renamed the World Surf League in 2015. During the ASP era, it ran elite men’s and women’s tours, including events that determined official world champions.
The Association of Surfing Professionals was founded in 1982. Its competitions helped standardize judging, rankings, event organization, and qualification pathways for top surfers around the world.
Older articles, records, and surfing broadcasts may therefore refer to an “ASP world title” even though the same overall championship structure is now associated with the WSL. ASP refers to the organization, not to a maneuver, board design, or type of wave.
