What did Leonardo da Vinci’s odometer record?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s odometer recorded distance traveled.

Leonardo designed a wheel-based odometer that could measure the length of a journey. As the cart moved, a wheel turned a series of gears. After a set number of rotations, a mechanism released a small object, such as a pebble, into a container. Counting the released objects provided an estimate of the distance covered.

The design belongs to Leonardo’s broader interest in mechanical measurement and surveying. It was especially useful in principle for mapping roads, planning construction, and estimating the scale of landscapes. The machine did not need a modern display; its output could be counted physically.

Leonardo did not invent the general idea of an odometer from nothing. Ancient devices for measuring travel distance are associated with engineers such as Vitruvius and Heron of Alexandria. His design is notable as a Renaissance mechanical interpretation of the same problem.
