What did Leonardo da Vinci design to imitate a human soldier’s movements?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a robot knight to imitate a human soldier’s movements.

Leonardo developed the mechanical knight around 1495 for a pageant organized by Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The machine was dressed in medieval armor and used a system of pulleys, cables, and gears to sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and jaw.

The original device was probably lost, and no complete contemporary model survives. In 1957, historian Carlo Pedretti identified drawings in the Codex Atlanticus that appeared to show the mechanism behind the knight. Engineer Mark Rosheim later built working reconstructions based on Leonardo’s plans.

The robot knight was not an autonomous robot in the modern electronic sense. It was a theatrical mechanical automaton operated by internal mechanical linkages. Its importance lies in showing Leonardo’s understanding of anatomy, mechanics, and public spectacle.
