What device inspired Satoshi Tajiri’s Pokémon trading concept?

The story behind the answer

The Game Link Cable inspired Satoshi Tajiri’s Pokémon trading concept.

Tajiri saw the Game Boy’s ability to connect two systems as a way to make creatures appear to travel between players. The idea drew on his childhood interest in collecting insects and exchanging them with friends, but transformed that experience into an interactive video-game system.

The original Pokémon games used the cable to let players trade Pokémon between compatible Game Boy versions. Trading was not merely an optional extra: some Pokémon could evolve only after being traded, and completing the Pokédex generally required access to creatures unavailable in a single version.

This connectivity helped distinguish Pokémon from many other role-playing games of its era. Instead of making one version contain every creature, Nintendo and Game Freak encouraged communication between players. The concept also helped turn the Game Boy from a single-player handheld into a social platform for collection and exchange.
