What degree did successful candidates earn at the highest level of China’s traditional civil-service examinations?

The story behind the answer

Successful candidates at the highest level of China’s traditional civil-service examinations earned the jinshi degree.

The jinshi examination was held under imperial authority and was associated with the metropolitan and palace examinations. Candidates who passed gained exceptional prestige and improved access to official careers. The system changed over many centuries, so its exact procedures and privileges were not identical in every dynasty.

The examination system tested mastery of the Confucian classics, literary composition, and formal essay styles. It helped make classical learning a major route into government service, although wealth, tutoring, family connections, and local opportunity also affected who could prepare successfully.

Jinshi is often confused with lower examination degrees such as juren and shengyuan. The Qing dynasty abolished the imperial examination system in 1905, ending the long-running institutional framework in its traditional form.
