What date was the closing ceremony for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics?

The story behind the answer

The closing ceremony for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics was held on 25 February 2018. It took place at Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium in South Korea, bringing the XXIII Olympic Winter Games to an official close after 16 days of competition.

The ceremony ran from 8:00 p.m. to 10:05 p.m. Korea Standard Time. Its theme, “The Next Wave,” combined music, dance and visual performances while celebrating the athletes’ achievements. South Korean performers included singer Jang Sa-ik, guitarist Yang Tae-hwan, CL and the group EXO.

IOC President Thomas Bach formally declared the Games closed, and the Olympic cauldron was extinguished. The Olympic flag was then handed to Beijing, host of the next Winter Olympics in 2022. This handover is a traditional part of the closing ceremony and symbolises the transition to the next host city.

A common mix-up is confusing the closing ceremony date with the Games’ opening date. The opening ceremony was held on 9 February, although some preliminary events began on 8 February.
