What date was scheduled as X-Day for Operation Olympic, the planned invasion of Kyushu?

The story behind the answer

November 1, 1945, was scheduled as X-Day for Operation Olympic, the planned invasion of Kyushu.

Operation Olympic was the first phase of Operation Downfall, the Allied plan for invading Japan. The proposed assault would have targeted southern Kyushu, using Okinawa as a staging base and capturing territory suitable for airfields and later operations. The United States Sixth Army was assigned to the initial landings.

Planners selected several landing areas, including beaches near Miyazaki, Ariake Bay, and Kushikino. The operation would have involved a very large Allied naval and ground force, supported by aircraft operating from newly captured bases. Its success was intended to prepare the way for Operation Coronet, the planned 1946 invasion of the Kantō Plain near Tokyo.

X-Day never arrived. Japan surrendered in August 1945, after the atomic bombings, the Soviet declaration of war, and the Japanese government’s acceptance of the Potsdam terms. March 1, 1946, belongs to Coronet’s planned Y-Day, not Olympic’s X-Day.
