What date was Black Tuesday, the day the 1929 Wall Street Crash reached its most famous peak?

The story behind the answer

Black Tuesday, the most famous day of the 1929 Wall Street Crash, occurred on October 29, 1929.

On that Tuesday, about 16 million shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, a record at the time. Prices fell sharply as investors rushed to sell, following major declines on Black Thursday, October 24, and Black Monday, October 28.

The crash did not by itself create the entire Great Depression, but it destroyed enormous amounts of paper wealth and damaged confidence in banks, businesses, and investment. Economic contraction, bank failures, falling production, and unemployment followed during the early 1930s.

Black Tuesday is often confused with Black Thursday because both were pivotal sessions. Black Thursday began the dramatic final week of October, while Black Tuesday produced the crash's most remembered selling wave. The market eventually reached a low in July 1932, far below its 1929 peak.
