What date was Black Thursday, the first major trading day of the 1929 Wall Street Crash?

The story behind the answer

Black Thursday, the first major trading day of the 1929 Wall Street Crash, was October 24, 1929.

On that Thursday, panic selling produced enormous trading volume on the New York Stock Exchange. A group of leading bankers bought heavily traded shares to stabilize prices, and the immediate decline temporarily eased. The intervention did not solve the deeper problems of speculation, margin buying, and weakening economic conditions.

The crash continued the following week. Black Monday occurred on October 28, followed by Black Tuesday on October 29, when selling intensified and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell sharply. These names refer to separate trading days within the same crash.

The 1929 crash did not by itself cause every aspect of the Great Depression, but it damaged confidence and helped worsen the downturn. The Dow eventually reached a much lower low in 1932.
