What date is Mexico’s Independence Day, commemorating the 1810 Grito de Dolores?

The story behind the answer

Mexico celebrates Independence Day on September 16, commemorating the 1810 Grito de Dolores that launched its war of independence.

According to tradition, priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called residents to revolt against Spanish rule from the town of Dolores in the early hours of September 16, 1810. This appeal became known as the Grito de Dolores, or Cry of Dolores.

The most famous modern ritual occurs late on September 15, when Mexico’s president repeats a ceremonial “Grito” from the National Palace in Mexico City. Crowds then celebrate with flags, music, fireworks, and the national anthem. The public holiday itself is September 16.

Mexico’s Cinco de Mayo, observed on May 5, commemorates the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is not Mexico’s Independence Day.
