Answer
October 29, 1929
Answer
October 29, 1929
Black Tuesday, the final major crash day of 1929, occurred on October 29, 1929.
Nearly 16 million shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange that day, a record at the time. Prices fell sharply after earlier selling on Black Thursday, October 24, and Black Monday, October 28. The combined selling destroyed billions of dollars in quoted market value.
The 1929 crash did not by itself create every condition of the Great Depression, but it intensified financial fear, weakened businesses and banks, and reduced investment. Credit contraction, falling demand, bank failures, and policy choices also mattered. A common mistake is to treat Black Tuesday as the entire Depression rather than one dramatic event within a much larger economic crisis.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average eventually lost almost 89% from its September 1929 peak to its 1932 low. It did not permanently regain its 1929 closing high until 1954.
