What date is known as Black Tuesday, the day the Dow Jones suffered a historic 1929 crash?

The story behind the answer

Black Tuesday, the day of the historic 1929 Dow Jones crash, was October 29, 1929.

On that day, roughly 16 million shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, then an extraordinary volume. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell about 12%, following the sharp decline known as Black Monday on October 28. Together, the two sessions intensified public fear and forced many investors to sell.

The crash followed years of heavy speculation, widespread buying on margin, and rapidly rising share prices. The market had already shown stress in September and October, but the October 29 collapse became the most famous date associated with the event. The crash did not by itself cause every feature of the Great Depression, but it severely damaged confidence and helped deepen the economic downturn.

A common mix-up is Black Thursday, October 24, when heavy selling first became especially visible. Black Tuesday is the later date most often cited as the climax of the initial Wall Street collapse.
