What date is known as Black Tuesday, the 1929 Wall Street Crash day when U.S. stocks suffered massive selling?

The story behind the answer

Black Tuesday, the most famous selling day of the 1929 Wall Street Crash, occurred on October 29, 1929.

On that Tuesday, about 16 million shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, then an extraordinary volume. Prices fell sharply as investors rushed to sell, following severe declines on Black Thursday and Black Monday.

The crash did not by itself create the entire Great Depression, but it destroyed wealth and intensified fears about banks, businesses, and employment. The broader economic downturn deepened during the following years.

October 24 is called Black Thursday, while October 28 is Black Monday. September 3 was the market’s pre-crash peak in 1929, so it is not the date associated with Black Tuesday.
