What date is known as Black Thursday, the opening day of the 1929 Wall Street crash?

The story behind the answer

Black Thursday, the opening day of the 1929 Wall Street crash, was October 24, 1929.

On that day, heavy selling on the New York Stock Exchange pushed prices sharply lower. A group of major bankers, including J. P. Morgan & Company, attempted to calm the market by buying leading stocks. Their intervention helped produce a temporary recovery, but it did not end the underlying panic.

The crash is often associated with October 29, known as Black Tuesday, when selling became even more severe. Black Monday, October 28, was another especially damaging session. The market’s peak had occurred on September 3, 1929, before the prolonged decline.

The crash did not single-handedly cause the Great Depression. It was one part of a wider economic breakdown involving bank failures, falling production, debt problems, and unemployment. The 1929 market collapse remains one of the most studied financial crises in history.
