What date is known as Black Thursday, the day the 1929 Wall Street crash began with heavy selling?

The story behind the answer

October 24, 1929, is known as Black Thursday, the day the 1929 Wall Street crash began with heavy selling.

The New York Stock Exchange experienced intense selling on October 24. A group of leading bankers bought shares in an attempt to restore confidence, and prices temporarily stabilized. The intervention did not end the underlying panic.

Selling returned with greater force on October 28, known as Black Monday, and October 29, known as Black Tuesday. The market’s decline continued for years, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average eventually reaching its low in July 1932.

Black Thursday is therefore the opening date of the famous crash, not its final or largest single panic day. The crash followed a period of heavy speculation, widespread use of borrowed money, and economic weaknesses that became more visible afterward.
