What date is commonly called Black Tuesday, the most notorious day of the 1929 Wall Street Crash?

The story behind the answer

Black Tuesday, the most notorious day of the 1929 Wall Street Crash, occurred on October 29, 1929.

On that day, investors traded roughly 16 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange as panic selling accelerated. The market’s collapse followed a speculative boom in the 1920s, when share prices rose rapidly and many buyers used borrowed money.

Black Tuesday was preceded by Black Thursday on October 24 and Black Monday on October 28. Although the crash did not single-handedly cause the Great Depression, it damaged banks, businesses, and household wealth and intensified the worldwide economic downturn.

A common mix-up is treating October 29 as the entire crash. The Wall Street Crash unfolded across several turbulent trading sessions, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average did not reach its ultimate low until July 1932.
