Bolivia celebrates Independence Day on August 6, commemorating the declaration that created the independent Republic of Bolivia in 1825.
The act was issued at Chuquisaca, now called Sucre, after the victory of independence forces over Spanish royalists. The new republic was named Bolivia in honor of Simón Bolívar, whose campaigns helped liberate much of northern South America.
National celebrations include parades, official speeches, military ceremonies, concerts, and cultural events. Sucre remains Bolivia’s constitutional capital, while La Paz serves as the seat of government. Another date sometimes confused with Independence Day is July 16, which marks the 1809 revolution in La Paz, an important early uprising but not the final national declaration.
