What Danish strait separates the island of Funen from the Jutland Peninsula?
Answer
Little Belt
Answer
Little Belt
The Danish strait separating the island of Funen from the Jutland Peninsula is the Little Belt.
The Little Belt, or Lillebælt in Danish, is one of Denmark’s three principal straits. It runs between Funen and Jutland and forms part of the water route connecting the Baltic Sea with the Kattegat and, beyond it, the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean.
The strait is about 50 kilometers long and varies greatly in width. Near the Narrows, or Snævringen, it contracts to roughly 800 meters. Its deepest point reaches about 81 meters, making it deeper than Denmark’s Great Belt, the larger neighboring strait between Funen and Zealand.
The Little Belt is crossed by two major bridges near Middelfart and Fredericia. The older bridge opened in 1935; the newer bridge opened in 1970. Great Belt is the common mix-up, but it separates Funen from Zealand. Øresund lies between Zealand and Sweden, while Skagerrak is the open sea area between Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
