A waltz traditionally features prominently at a quinceañera.
The formal dance often involves the quinceañera and members of her court of honor. In many celebrations, the group rehearses a choreographed routine and performs it for family and guests. The dance gives the event a ceremonial, staged moment rather than functioning only as open dancing at a party.
The waltz is associated with the formal European-style elements that became part of the celebration, including ballroom clothing, escorts, and a carefully planned presentation. Modern families may add contemporary music, regional dances, or a second choreographed number, so not every quinceañera follows exactly the same program.
Tango and salsa are important dances in Latin American culture, but neither is the traditional generic answer for the formal quinceañera dance. The word vals, used in Spanish, also means waltz and may appear in descriptions of the event.
