A waltz traditionally begins the formal dance program at a quinceañera.
The honoree commonly performs the first formal dance with her father or another important family member. In many celebrations, the court of attendants then joins the dance, creating a choreographed presentation for the guests.
The waltz represents the formal transition into a new stage of life and also gives the celebration a ceremonial opening. Modern quinceañeras may add contemporary music, themed choreography, or several dance styles, but the waltz remains the traditional starting point.
A quinceañera does not require one universal dance routine. Customs vary by country, family, and community, so later parts of the program may include salsa, cumbia, pop choreography, or other regional and popular dances. The canonical traditional answer for the opening formal dance is still “waltz.”
