The waltz traditionally serves as the quinceañera’s formal presentation dance.
A quinceañera often performs a choreographed waltz with members of her court of honor. The dance is usually presented at the reception after the ceremony and can symbolize the celebrant’s formal transition into a new stage of life. In Spanish-speaking contexts, the dance may be called a vals.
The tradition reflects European ballroom influence incorporated into Latin American social celebrations. Modern families may preserve the classic waltz, combine it with contemporary music, or follow it with a surprise dance featuring pop, regional, or urban styles.
The waltz is not the only dance that can appear at a quinceañera. Salsa, cumbia, bachata, and other dances may be included in the entertainment, but the formal court presentation is most conventionally associated with the waltz.
