The waltz is traditionally associated with a quinceañera court. A formal court may perform a choreographed waltz as part of the celebrant’s presentation at the reception.
The association comes from the waltz’s long-standing image of elegance and formal social dancing. Families often rehearse the routine for weeks or months, coordinating entrances, turns, costumes, and music. The dance can be performed by the quinceañera with an escort and then by the wider court.
Contemporary celebrations are much more flexible than the traditional format. A court may perform pop, Latin, hip-hop, or other choreographed routines, sometimes called a surprise dance. Thus, waltz identifies the classic formal style, but it is not the only music or dance used at modern quinceañeras.
