A waltz commonly opens the formal reception at a traditional quinceañera.
The opening waltz, often called the vals, traditionally features the quinceañera dancing with her father or another important escort. A court of honor may then join the dance. This formal presentation gives the reception a ceremonial beginning before guests move on to other dances and festivities.
The waltz is associated with elegance and a carefully rehearsed routine, but modern celebrations are more flexible. Families may choose a contemporary song, a choreographed medley, or a regional dance instead. Some celebrations retain a traditional vals while adding a surprise dance later in the evening.
The waltz should not be confused with the entire entertainment program. A quinceañera reception can include dinner, speeches, a cake presentation, live music, a DJ, and many other dances. The opening waltz is simply the customary formal dance that introduces the celebrant and her court.
