What currency replaced Mongolia’s Mongolian dollar in 1925?

The Mongolian tögrög replaced Mongolia’s Mongolian dollar in 1925.

Mongolia introduced the tögrög, also spelled tugrik or tögrög, on 9 December 1925. It became the country’s first national currency and was established during the Mongolian People’s Republic. The currency’s ISO 4217 code is MNT, and it is divided into 100 möngö.

The name tögrög is associated with the idea of something round, a reference often linked to traditional monetary terminology. The Mongolian dollar had circulated before the tögrög, alongside foreign currencies and silver-based money. The new unit helped give Mongolia a state-controlled monetary system.

The Bank of Mongolia issues the tögrög. Modern Mongolian banknotes range from small denominations to high-value notes, and the ₮ symbol is commonly used. The tögrög is sometimes incorrectly called the Mongolian dollar because of the earlier currency’s name, but the two are historically distinct.
