What currency is Russia’s official money and is subdivided into 100 kopecks?
Answer
Russian ruble
Answer
Russian ruble
Russia’s official currency, subdivided into 100 kopecks, is the Russian ruble.
The ruble is one of the world’s oldest national currencies still in use. The name is traditionally linked to a Russian word meaning “to chop,” possibly referring to pieces cut from silver bullion. The ruble’s symbol is ₽ and its ISO code is RUB.
The Central Bank of Russia issues ruble banknotes and coins. The currency has undergone major reforms, including the 1998 redenomination in which 1 new ruble equalled 1,000 old rubles. That reform followed the economic and financial turmoil of the 1990s.
Kopecks are the ruble’s hundredth subdivision, although inflation has reduced the everyday importance of the smallest denominations. The ruble should not be confused with the Belarusian ruble, which has the same broad currency name but a separate national issuer and ISO code BYN.
