What currency is issued by the Central Bank of Iceland?

The Central Bank of Iceland issues the Icelandic króna, Iceland’s national currency.

The króna was introduced in 1874, when Iceland was part of the Danish monetary system. It replaced the earlier Danish rigsdaler in Iceland and is related historically to the currencies of other Nordic countries.

The Icelandic króna uses the ISO code ISK and is divided into 100 aurar in principle, although aurar coins are no longer used. The Icelandic word króna means “crown,” just as krone and krona do in several neighboring countries. The Icelandic króna is therefore distinct from Norway’s krone, Denmark’s krone and Sweden’s krona, despite their related names.
