What currency is India’s official money and uses the symbol ₹?

The story behind the answer

India’s official currency, represented by the symbol ₹, is the Indian rupee.

The word rupee comes from the Sanskrit word rūpya, meaning wrought silver or a coin of silver. The modern rupee developed from monetary systems used across the Indian subcontinent, including the silver rupee associated with Sher Shah Suri and later Mughal and British administrations.

The Reserve Bank of India issues banknotes, while the Government of India is responsible for minting coins. One rupee contains 100 paise, although low-value paise coins are rarely used in ordinary transactions today.

India adopted the rupee symbol in 2010 after a national design competition. It combines Devanagari and Roman lettering, making the symbol distinctive from the currency names used in neighbouring countries.
