What crystal brand is used on the Times Square Ball?

The story behind the answer

Waterford is the crystal brand used on the Times Square Ball.

Waterford Crystal has supplied the illuminated ball's crystal panels since the ball was redesigned for the 2000 celebration. The partnership connected the Irish crystal maker with one of the world's most recognizable New Year's Eve events. The panels are cut into geometric patterns and arranged over a faceted sphere containing internal lighting.

The ball has changed substantially since the first drop in 1907. The inaugural object was made from iron and wood, while later versions used materials including aluminum. The present ball is much larger and heavier than the original and uses computer-controlled LEDs to produce changing colors and effects.

Waterford is sometimes confused with Swarovski because both companies are famous for decorative crystal. They are separate brands, and the Times Square Ball tradition specifically identifies Waterford Crystal as its crystal-panel partner. The event also includes annual commemorative crystal designs that can be added to the ball's pattern.
